‘Zero Waste’ Doublet Shirt

$379.90

Description

A cynical jab at greenwashing and ‘zero-waste’ fashion. Environmental concerns in fashion have largely resulted in many misconceptions regarding the ethicality and environmental impact of the garment industry. The irony being, that hyper-fast fashion has exploded in the same era of climate consciousness.

The Doublet Shirt frames a standard dress shirt with an aberrant skeleton of shirt seams. Twisted and tucked, the ‘functionally sound’ outer layer can be styled draping from the shoulders or buttoned up as a faux overlayer. Overdyed in colour shifted persimmon tannin to achieve a warm brownish grey.

Kakishibu (柿渋) is a natural pigment that originates from Japan. It’s produced by ageing and fermenting unripe persimmons for up to three years. The tannin rich persimmon dye has a long history being used as a dye, paint, and traditional medicine being cherished for its antiseptic and waterproofing properties.

The pigment from kakishibu behaves quite unlike many other natural dyes, as it will produce a whole spectrum of shades depending on how it is handled and, perhaps more interestingly, how it is exposed to sunlight in the drying process. These scarves have been colour-shifted with an iron mordant to achieve the grey and slate hues. Kakishibu reacts to UV exposure, in other words, it sunburns. This results in a wonderful patina that evolves with age and wear, shifting through various shades of grey- with hues of olive and brown.
