Description

A patchworked neckerchief style scarf that has been naturally dyed with persimmon tannin. Taking on the shape of an enlarged shirt collar stand, this scarf questions the traditional shape and fabric composition of square silk scarves. Designed for wearability, the cotton scarf is soft and cool on the skin. It pairs effortlessly with the aesthetic that has become endemic to Ōtautahi artisans and makers.

Kakishibu (柿渋) is a natural pigment that originates from Japan. It’s produced by ageing and fermenting unripe persimmons for up to three years. The tannin rich persimmon dye has a long history being used as a dye, paint, and traditional medicine, being cherished for its antiseptic and waterproofing properties. 

The pigment from kakishibu behaves quite unlike many other natural dyes, as it will produce a whole spectrum of shades depending on how it is handled and, perhaps more interestingly, how it is exposed to sunlight in the drying process. Kakishibu reacts to UV exposure, in other words, it sunburns. This results in a wonderful patina that evolves with age and wear, shifting through various shades of brown, ochre and olive.
